Privacy Policy: Eszett

Summary

Everything you produce by using Eszett — your progress, your streak, your settings — is stored only on your device. There are no accounts and no advertising, and your answers, your notes and your review history are never uploaded.

The app does send anonymous usage statistics to Google Analytics for Firebase: which screens are opened, how long a session lasts, and basic facts about the device. This is used to work out which parts of the course need improving. It is described in full under Usage analytics below, and it is the only thing the app transmits.

Two further things involve companies other than the developer: Android’s own backup feature, under Backups, and the analytics service above. Both are operated by Google.

What the app stores on your device

The app keeps a local database and a small settings file so it can remember where you are in the course. This information never leaves your device.

Learning progress

• Which lessons you have completed, and when.
• Your answers to exercises — whether each was correct, and when you answered.
• Flashcard review scheduling: each card’s ease factor, interval, repetition count, and next due date, as used by the spaced-repetition algorithm.
• Cards you have marked as favourites.
• Experience points earned, with the activity that earned them.
• Achievements you have unlocked, and when.
• Checkpoint exam results: score, section, and whether you passed.

Settings and preferences

• Theme preference (light, dark, or system).
• Whether the daily reminder is on, and the time of day you chose for it.
• Your daily experience-point goal.
• Your current streak count and the date you were last active, used to calculate the streak.
• Your currently selected level (A1–C1).
• Which bundled content packs are installed, so the app knows when to update them.

That is the complete list, and none of it is transmitted. The app does not store your name, email address, phone number, precise location, contacts, or photos, because it never asks for them.

Usage analytics

The app includes Google Analytics for Firebase, a service provided by Google. It reports how the app is used so that the developer can see which lessons are abandoned, which exercises are too hard, and which features are never opened.

What is sent

• App interactions — app opened, screens viewed, session start and length, app updated, app removed.
• Device and app facts — device model, operating system version, app version, system language, and the country your connection appears to come from.
• Approximate location — a country-level guess, derived by Google from your IP address. Your IP address is not retained as part of the analytics record.
• Identifiers — an app instance ID, a random identifier created when you install the app, and your device’s Advertising ID. These identify an installation, not a person, and are not linked to any account, because the app has none.

What is never sent

Your learning data. No lesson answer, exam score, flashcard rating, streak, note or setting listed in the previous section is included in analytics. The reports show that a screen was opened, not what you did on it or whether you got it right.

Who receives it and for how long

The data is collected by Google and processed on the developer’s behalf under Google’s Privacy Policy and the Firebase data processing terms. It is not sold, and it is not shared with any other company. In the Firebase console the developer sees aggregate charts, not individuals.

Event and identifier data is retained for 2 months, after which Google deletes it. Aggregate reports, which cannot be traced back to an installation, are kept indefinitely.

How to limit or stop it

• Reset or delete the Advertising ID. On your device, open Settings → Privacy → Ads (the exact path varies by manufacturer). You can delete the advertising ID outright, which stops it being sent, or reset it to break the link to earlier data.
• Opt out of ads personalisation in the same screen, which restricts how the identifier may be used.
• Uninstall the app, which ends all collection.
• Ask for deletion. Write to the contact address below and the developer will delete the analytics records for your installation. See Retention and deletion.

What the app does not do

• No accounts. There is no sign-up, no login, and no profile. The app works fully without any identity, and nothing the app sends is tied to one.
• No advertising. There are no ads and no advertising SDKs. The Advertising ID described above is collected by the analytics library; it is not used to show you ads, and no advertising network receives it from this app.
• No crash reporting. The app does not use Crashlytics or any other crash or performance reporting service.
• No content downloads. All learning content ships inside the app itself and is read from local files. Nothing is fetched at runtime, so the lessons work with the network switched off.
• No selling or sharing. Your data is not sold, rented, or shared with third parties for their own purposes.

Permissions

Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) — used only to show the optional daily study reminder. The app asks for this permission the first time you switch the reminder on, and never otherwise. If you decline, the rest of the app works normally.

You will also see the following permissions on the Google Play store page. You are not asked to grant them; Android grants them at install time.

From the analytics library:

• INTERNET — sends the usage statistics described above. It is not used for anything else: no content is downloaded and no learning data is uploaded.
• AD_ID and ACCESS_ADSERVICES_AD_ID — read the device Advertising ID for analytics.
• ACCESS_ADSERVICES_ATTRIBUTION and com.google.android.finsky.permission.BIND_GET_INSTALL_REFERRER_SERVICE — let Google count which installs came from which Play Store listing.

From the scheduling library, used for the daily reminder:

• WAKE_LOCK — lets the scheduled reminder finish its work.
• RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED — restores your pending reminder after the device restarts.
• ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE — part of the scheduling library.
• FOREGROUND_SERVICE — declared by the same library. This app does not run any foreground service.

Notifications

If you turn on the daily reminder, the app schedules a local notification at the time you select. It is generated on your device by your device. Nothing about the reminder is sent anywhere, and no notification content is shared with the developer or any third party.

If you reach your daily goal before the reminder time, no notification is shown.

Backups

Android’s Auto Backup is enabled for this app. This is a feature of the Android operating system: when it is active on your device, Android may copy the app’s data — that is, the learning progress and settings listed above — to the Google Drive account associated with your device, so it can be restored if you reinstall the app or set up a new phone.

This backup is handled entirely by Google, is covered by Google’s Privacy Policy, and is not accessible to the developer of this app. You can turn Android backups off in your device settings under Settings → Google → Backup.

Children

The app is a general-audience language-learning tool. It is not directed at children under 13, and it is not distributed through Google Play’s Families programme. Because it collects an advertising identifier, it should not be used by children under 13.

Retention and deletion

Your learning data stays on your device for as long as the app is installed, and you are in control of it at all times:

• To erase everything on the device: uninstall the app, or go to Settings → Apps → Eszett → Storage → Clear data. This permanently deletes all progress and settings.
• If Android Auto Backup has stored a copy in your Google Drive, you can remove it from Google Drive → Storage → Backups.

Analytics records held by Google are deleted automatically after 2 months. To have the records for your installation deleted sooner, write to the contact address below. Please say that you are asking about Eszett; you do not need to identify yourself, and the developer has no way to connect an installation to a person without your help.

Changes to this policy

If the app changes what it stores or transmits, this policy will be updated before that version is released, and the effective date at the top will change. Planned future features such as account sync would be a change of this kind and would be disclosed here first.
